Exercise for prostate health and surveillance

Hard interval training lowered PSA in men on surveillance.

TreatmentYou can do this

What studies found

In the ERASE trial (52 men), 12 weeks of supervised high-intensity intervals improved fitness and lowered PSA and PSA velocity versus usual care. In 57,652 Swedish men, those whose fitness rose 3% or more a year had 35% lower risk of developing prostate cancer.

The catch

ERASE was small and short with no change in PSA doubling time; the Swedish study was observational and showed no effect on deaths.

What to do

With your doctor's OK, add interval sessions (hard efforts with recovery) about three times a week.
