What the evidence shows

The claims come from lab and animal studies. For example, sulforaphane from broccoli killed breast cancer stem cells in mice and cell cultures, but at doses higher than eating broccoli can reach; the researchers said it hadn't been tested in patients and didn't advise supplements. A 2024 analysis of curcumin concluded that using it against cancer isn't scientifically justified.

What to do

Eat broccoli, turmeric and other plant foods for their own sake, but don't treat any of them as a cancer treatment or a reason to delay one. Each food on these lists is rated individually in the food finder.
